Farewell, Twinkies!

Our family is in mourning at the news that Twinkie factories around the country, including one in Los Angeles, are shutting down.  Although I have eaten only one Twinkie in my entire life, it was a formative experience.

25+ years ago, my office and lab mate was astounded to hear that I had never eaten a Twinkie.  He marched me upstairs to the vending machines and bought a pack, saying that everyone should try a Twinkie at least once in their life.  I was touched by the gesture, but didn't feel any need to eat another one.  But I did marry the guy.

When's the last time you ate a Twinkie?

  1. That's the only good reason to eat a Twinkie I have ever heard. I ate many a chocolate Hostess cupcake as a kid (peeling off the frosting first, of course). My Dad would by them at the outlet store for cheap(raising four of us).

  3. That's the best Twinkies story ever.
I may have eaten (part of) a Twinkie; my memory is failing.
But Twinkies taught me a lot about science and the internet. :)

  4. Probably in the fourth grade, or thereabouts. Even at that age I did not like them very much.

    Cute story!

  5. @ Cloud, we served cheesecake sandwiched between two layers of white cake. Each tier held a different flavor and we ran out of cake when guests wanted to sample all three flavors.

@ KC Thanks for the link! It looks very interesting and I look forward to exploring it.

@ BD No, I did not marry you because of the Twinkie. Some days, I'm not sure why I married you. But I'm certain that, in 25+ years, I've never been bored.

  8. Best Twinkie story ever....and it seems that he result will live longer that the current company. But someone will buy up that brand and keep it going, I am sure.

  9. Never. In northeastern Pennsylvania, we ate Tastykakes; never even saw Hostess in the other kids' lunches, that I can recall. The Philly cheesecake trucks in LA offer Tastykakes to appeal to Pennsylvanians' sense of nostalgia; and Tastykakes are sometimes imported for Penn State alumni events out here. I probably haven't had a Butterscotch Krimpet in 20 years, but the sensory memories are strong.

  10. That is the most hilarious thing I ever read. Rest assured some other company will produce Twinkies when Hostess is no more.
