Net Nanny

One of Iris' friends Snapchatted this to her.

The backstory

Iris' high school issued--with great fanfare--Chromebooks to each student. The Chromebooks come with a filter that blocks a list of words, and all words containing those words.

This has the unintended consequence of blocking classes and assassination because they contain ass.

Iris asks, why is lace a bad word?

Readers, do you have any clue?

  1. I can't figure out why lace is a forbidden word. Also why is 'ass' a 'bad' word... an ass is an actual animal. Sounds like their program needs some work.

  2. I still can't believe that's the title you went with. "The Worst IT Department Ever: Unable To Realize The Problem With Their Censorship Software" is much catchier. Or anything that doesn't have the word nanny in it.

I also can't believe how much I despise my school's IT department. (They lost one kid's Chromebook and he got one a month late, hindering his ability to participate) (They don't just censor Google results, if your search terms include a banned word, even nested like classes, it won't let you proceed) (all major news websites are blocked) (et cetera et cetera et cetera)

    1. Do you remember when the school network only allowed white-listed URLs? That meant, I had to wait weeks to get them to clear a website that would be useful for your robotics team.

    2. I didn't even tell you how rudely the district network guy treated your teacher and I. She has a MS in engineering and I have a PhD in physics, and he talked to us like we were morons. Moreover, he gave us instructions that didn't work, and then said we didn't follow his instructions correctly.

  3. "Lace" might be a search term if you were looking for pictures of women in lingerie. Of course, the same could be said for silk, satin, strap, slip, waist, cup, skin, thigh, leg, chest...

Not sure, but if you look up "lace" on Urbandictionary.com you may find an answer?
    Love your blog.

    1. Wow. I was thinking that lace knitting is a really good mental exercise for building up young (and old) brains. I completely forgot it can be a verb for unhealthy activities.

When we cook in our home, infuse and lace are good words.

  5. A secretary in my office had an email that wouldn't send because it had an inappropriate word in it. She asked me to look at it. The problem was the addressee's name. The first line was "Dear Dick,"

    1. Why would your office use such a filter? What industry? Was it in response to an incident?

  6. I was never able to access The Pump Station from work. Oh god, there might be a nursing bra on there, next to the useful information about baby care.

Meanwhile I can apparently shop for lingerie at any of the major department stores from my desk without issue.

Maybe the filtered word is 'ace', to prevent searching for gambling sites? Easy to test out.
